Reno, Nevada boasts a month of internationally known performers
September 10, 2005
Reno, NV—Once in a great while, syzygy, a perfect alignment of the stars, is found. In October and November, the stars will line up in Reno as some of the finest performing artists find their way to Reno. One of the United States’ greatest composers, Joan Tower, joins the Reno Chamber Orchestra on October 22 and 23. The National Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin makes its first appearance in Nevada, hosted by the Reno Philharmonic Association and the RCO, on October 27 and 28 — Nevada Day. On November 4 and 6, Nevada Opera will present Puccini’s masterpiece, Tosca. As a finale, the extraordinary violinist, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg will join the Reno Philharmonic on November 13 and 14.
The Reno Chamber Orchestra begins this amazing month of music by presenting an all-American concert featuring the west coast premiere of Joan Tower’s composition Made In America. Ms. Tower, one of the preeminent American composers, and one of the most prominent female composers in music history will be on hand to conduct the RCO for this piece. Joan Tower’s Made in America will be premiered by 65 different orchestras in all 50 states throughout America during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
The Reno Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Joan Tower’s Made in America is part of Ford Made in America, a partnership program of the American Symphony Orchestra League and Meet the Composer. Ford Made in America is made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. This program is also generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding is provided by the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, JPMorgan Chase, Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund, and The Amphion Foundation. Local support for this project is generously provided by Lynn Bremer and Sue von Hennig.
Maestro Carl Topilow will lead the rest of the RCO’s concert. He is the music director of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra as well as director of orchestral studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Also a talented clarinetist, Mr. Topilow will perform as clarinet soloist with the orchestra in works of John Williams and George Gershwin. The program also features music by Aaron Copland and Russell Peck.
The National Symphony Orchestra chooses two states per year to visit. This happens to be Nevada’s lucky year. In October, the NSO, lead by Leonard Slatkin, comes to Las Vegas and Reno for a tour of the Silver State. The tour, funded by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through a grant from the United States Department of Education, gives the Nevada symphonies like the RCO and RPA, the opportunity to use the concert and appearance for fundraising and education purposes. The Thursday evening concert will be conducted by Mr. Slatkin and the proceeds will be split between the organizations to help advance their respective endowments and operating expenses, guaranteeing a secure future for the two orchestras. The Friday family concert will be lead by associate conductor, Emil De Cou. The show’s theme, “Flying Around America” will contain musical selections representing each of the country’s regions. Ticket prices for the Friday family program start at $5.00.
Leonard Slatkin, known for this vast range of repertoire and crusader for music education, boasts highly lauded European, Asian, and US tours, numerous national broadcasts, a White House celebration honoring the Orchestra and Mr. Slatkin for advocacy of America's artistic heritage, a Grammy for Best Classical Recording, awards for programming, the National Medal of the Arts, the nation's highest honor for a performing artist and 100 recordings recognized with five Grammy Awards and more than 50 other Grammy nominations.
Returning after her triumphant Madame Butterfly with the Nevada Opera, soprano Deborah Raymond will sing the title role in Tosca, sung in Italian, with supertitles on November 4th and 6th 2005. Making his debut with NOA, tenor Dinyar Vania plays the role of as her young lover “Mario Cavaradossi.” Baritone Dennis Jesse returns to Reno to unveil his first role of “Baron Scarpia.” Local baritone Stuart Duke is slated to sing the “Sacristan.” The internationally known cast is joined by the Nevada Opera Chorus, as well as The Nevada Opera Youth Chorus, all directed by Kyle Marrero, artistic director of Pensacola Opera. The beautiful sets are tentatively scheduled to come from Tri-Cities Opera in Binghamton, NY, as are the lush costumes.
In the final performance of the month, violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, joins the Reno Philharmonic to perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg is celebrated worldwide as one of the most original and fearless artists on the concert stage today. In 1999, the violinist was the subject of Academy Award® nominated documentary “Speaking In Strings.” A deeply private look at the woman behind all the accolades and controversy, the film explored the controversial and fascinating life of this fearless and irreverent, musician. Famous for her electrifying performances, passionate interpretations and musical depth, she is sought after by today’s greatest conductors and orchestras, as well as by fellow artists for collaborations in both classical and other genres. She is performing the Shostakovich Concerto in Reno before performing it in Los Angeles later in the month.
Due to the exciting line up of programs available and the limited number of seats, people are encouraged to call in advance to each organization to purchase tickets. These events are likely to sell out.
