Reno Phil Showcases Family on Thanksgiving Week
September 26, 2006
On Sunday, November 19th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 21st at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic arranges for a concerto that for the second time this season showcases two brothers. The concert, sponsored by the E.L. Cord Foundation, will also include Carl Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6.
Reno natives, brothers, and cellists, Peter and John Lenz will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos. Peter Lenz has been principal cello with the RPO since 1982. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mining Engineering, and is a Licensed Professional Engineer. John Lenz is a professor of music at the University of Nevada, where he teaches cello, horn, theory, and directs the orchestra. He currently serves as principal horn of the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, and the Great Basin Brass, and is the cellist (and horn when needed) of the Telluride Chamber Players, and the Argenta Ensemble. A resident of Reno since 1951, he received degrees from the University of Nevada and the New England Conservatory in Boston before joining the UNR faculty in 1972. His wife, Paula, and progeny, Ruth and Johnny, are also members of the Philharmonic. The Sierra Philharmonic League is the guest artist sponsor.
“The Lenz family is a local treasure,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “Their musical accomplishments just in the family alone would be astonishing to any community.”
Carl Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite, one of Nielsen’s most colorful and exciting works, was written in 1919 as incidental music for a play to be associated with music from the Middle East.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6. is nicknamed the “Pastoral” symphony due to the themes that are reminiscent of a countryside.
This concert is sponsored by The E.L. Cord Foundation. The Foundation was established December 4, 1962, by E.L. Cord, a businessman, industrialist, and innovator. Mr. Cord was best known in the 1930s as the manufacturer and distributor in the United States of a line of automobiles, such as the Cord, Auburn, and Dusenberg. After his death in 1974, the remaining assets of his estate, was given to The Cord Foundation, whose main areas of funding include: secondary and higher education, social services and youth organizations, and for cultural organizations, such as the Reno Philharmonic Association.
