Reno Phil Plans Grand Finale
January 25, 2007
On Sunday, April 1st at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 3rd at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic will close out the 38th Season of MasterClassics with a brave and unique concert. The concert will showcase a wildly diverse program. Duke Ellington’s Suite from The River, a truly American piece with Jazz influences, will be performed as well as Hector Berlioz’s over the top Symphonie Fantastique. Guest artist harpist, Jeremy Keppelmann, will perform George Friderick Handel’s Concerto for Harp.
Fourteen-year-old Jeremy Keppelmann is in the 9th grade at Sage Ridge School, and studies harp with Linda Rollo of Saratoga California. In February 2005, Jeremy performed his own composition, Spaghetti Rag, on PAX TV (now I TV) show, America's Most Talented Kids. In 2005, Jeremy was one of 25 young harpists from around the world invited to perform at the World Harp Congress in Dublin, Ireland. He also finished 3rd place in the junior division of the Liley-Laskine International Harp Competition in Deauville, France. Besides his talent for music, Jeremy also loves acting and the visual arts. In May of 2006, he had the lead role of “Edward Middleton” in the Sage Ridge musical production of the Drunkard.
Duke Ellington’s Suite from The River premiered with the American Ballet Theater featuring choreography by Alvin Ailey in 1970 at the State Theater in New York City. “Ellington is known mostly as a jazz and big band bandleader and musician,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “His musical style has mixed jazz classical music influences and is ‘beyond category.’” The piece is sponsored by Reed and Eiko Bingham.
Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is a favorite in classical music circles. The symphony is a fantasy that is based on a love affair that ends in an execution, very similar to Berlioz’s own tumultuous relationship with his wife, Harriet Smithman. The piece is sponsored by Jill Brandin and Durian Pingree.
