Sarah Chang Makes First Appearance in Reno
January 25, 2007
On Sunday, March 4th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 6th at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic hosts one of the biggest names in classical music, Sarah Chang. The concert, sponsored by IGT, will also include Bedrich Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Scottish” symphony.

Violinist Sarah Chang is recognized the world over as one of classical music’s most captivating and gifted performers. One of the most remarkable prodigies of any generation, she has matured into a young artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional range continue to astonish. This past season, Ms. Chang appeared with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the symphonies of San Francisco, Nashville, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Montreal, Seattle, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. Ms. Chang began her violin studies at age 4 and promptly enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with the late Dorothy DeLay. Her early auditions, at age 8, led to immediate engagements with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Along with Pete Sampras and Wynton Marsalis, she is a featured artist in Movado’s global advertising campaign “The Art of Time.” In June 2004, Ms. Chang became the youngest person to receive the Hollywood Bowl's Hall of Fame award. She is a past recipient of the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, and Gramophone’s “Young Artist of the Year” award. The remarkable accomplishments of her career were recognized in 1999 when she received the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards given to instrumentalists. She will be performing Jean Sibelius’ Concerto for Violin.

“I’m proud to say that I conducted Sarah in her professional debut,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “As she has gone on to amazing success, I was never surprised.”

Bedrich Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride, was first performed with the Phil in 1989. Written in 1866, The Bartered Bride, was the first Czech opera. Smetana said that he wrote the opera as a retort to the accusation that his work was too much like Wagner, deep and heavy. So this opera is light, lively, and comedic.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Scottish” symphony, was written in 1829 while Mendelssohn was on holiday at the Holyrood Palace, Scotland. His themes are derived from his travels thought the country.

This concert is sponsored by IGT. Mendelssohn Symphony is sponsored by Edgar F. and Ella C. Kleiner, the concerto for Violin is sponsored by Bruce and Peggy Bossie, and Ms. Chang’s appearance is sponsored by the Atlantis Casino Resort.
