Reno Phil completes the last MasterClassics series with Jekowsky
Hundreds of musicians pack the stage for an amazing finale
January 16, 2008
For the season finale, on Sunday April 27th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday April 29th at 7:30 p.m. Music Director Jekowsky has planned fitting ending to his 10 year tenure with the MasterClassics series. The orchestra is scheduled to perform Orff’s thrilling Carmina Burana and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

Carmina Burana was performed by Jekowsky and the Phil in 2000 and 2004 to sold-out houses. The stage will be loaded with over 400 singers and musicians including soloists featuring Kiera Duffy, soprano, Tyler Nelson, tenor, and Brian Leerhuber, baritone. The composition, the most famous by Carl Orff, was written based on found medieval text, mostly bawdy poems about drinking and gambling. This very identifiable piece of music sets an ominous tone. It is been used on television, in commercials and in a variety of movies from Excalibur to Natural Born Killers to Jackass.

In almost a stark contrast to the Carmina Burana, the orchestra will open the program with Aaron Copland’s idyllic Appalachian Spring, a ballet score written with modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. The music achieved widespread popularity as an orchestral suite. Copland was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music for the ballet.
